Advancing Education with 3D Printing at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt

At the beginning of this year, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) embarked on an exciting journey by acquiring three cutting-edge 3D printers. In May 2024, the setup of the first printer was initiated, involving meticulous calibration and initial test prints.

The ‘Flashforge Creator 3 Pro’ printers are robust devices, each equipped with dual extruders. This configuration allows for the simultaneous printing of two identical components, a feature crucial for THWS’s intended battery module design. The involvement of students in creating and printing 3D models is significantly expedited with the combined six extruders at THWS’s disposal.

In June 2024, the dedicated team at the Technology Transfer Centre for Electromobility at THWS diligently worked on these 3D printers. The acquisition of these printers marks a significant milestone for the project, aimed at producing workpieces for hands-on training sessions. These printers empower the university to manufacture battery components cost-effectively, tailored specifically for educational purposes. For instance, if a teaching unit focuses on battery assembly, it allows for the fabrication of complete models, providing workshop participants with a comprehensive, hands-on experience. Though these may be dummy batteries, they serve as impressive learning trophies for display on desks.

THWS’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into education is exemplified by these 3D printers. They not only enhance the learning process but also prepare students for future challenges in the field of electromobility.
