THWS Research Presented at the 127th DGaO Annual Conference

At the 127th Annual Conference of the German Society for Applied Optics (DGaO), held at HAW Hamburg, representatives of the Technology Transfer Centre for Electromobility (TTZ-EMO) of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) presented a research entitled “Synergies between High-Precision Battery Research and European Knowledge Transfer in the Auto CoVE 2.0 Project.”

The poster demonstrated how advanced battery research conducted at TTZ-EMO can contribute to vocational education through the Erasmus+ Auto CoVE 2.0 project. The presentation highlighted the growing importance of battery technologies for the mobility transition and addressed the need for qualified professionals in the rapidly expanding battery sector. According to the poster, the sector is growing by approximately 13% annually, with demand expected to reach 1.5 million skilled workers by 2030.

The research component focused on investigations into the relationship between lithium-ion battery cell expansion and changes in lattice structure. The work combines synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements carried out at DESY PETRA III with high-precision interferometric dilatometry. The presented findings demonstrated a direct link between lattice expansion and cell expansion, enabling precise determination of lithium charge states in graphite.

The poster also showed how research results are transferred into educational content through Auto CoVE 2.0. The project aims to modernise automotive sector training across eight European countries using digital learning concepts related to sustainable mobility and new propulsion technologies. Examples of thematic areas presented on the poster included fire safety and thermal runaway diagnostics in workshop environments, as well as battery ageing and state-of-health (SOH) determination.

According to the presentation, the educational activities target vocational school teachers, decision-makers, students, and industry partners across Europe. The poster concluded that close cooperation between advanced research and vocational education helps ensure that learning materials are scientifically grounded and that future automotive professionals are better prepared to understand emerging diagnostic technologies.

The participation of THWS at the DGaO conference provided an opportunity to present Auto CoVE 2.0 within a scientific environment and to demonstrate how research findings can support the development of educational content for the future mobility sector.
