Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)

Foreword

The Auto-Cove 2.0 consortium is developing innovative study modules and training courses focused on alternative fuel vehicle service and sales across three European Qualifications Framework (EQF) levels. All courses developed within the project are funded by the European Union and are completely free for users. Upon completion, they will be published and stored in the Electude e-learning platform.

Course description

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are technologies designed to enhance vehicle safety and improve driving comfort. These systems use sensors, cameras, radar, and AI to assist drivers in various tasks, reducing the risk of accidents. ADAS are increasingly present in new vehicles. By understanding the operating principles of these systems, you can stay up to date with developments in the automotive industry.

With the training, you will learn to understand how ADAS systems work and how they affect driving.  You will also learn how ADAS systems promote traffic safety and traffic flow.

ADAS systems must be taken into account when working with modern cars.  Modern cars may have dozens of sensors for ADAS systems.

For example, after replacing the windshield, the car’s front camera must be calibrated.  The course covers both static and dynamic calibration of the sensors of the most common ADAS systems in cars.

You will learn how radars and cameras work, which will help you diagnose problems and carry out repairs efficiently. ADAS training gives you the opportunity to use the latest technology in your practical work. Example: You will learn how to use diagnostic tools specially designed for testing and repairing ADAS systems.

See below an example of dynamic calibration of the front camera and front radar.

The image below shows an example of a car’s ADAS system.  The car has so-called surround cameras (front camera, side cameras and rear camera) (360 cameras) that show the surroundings from a so-called bird’s eye view.

This system makes it easier to park and drive a car in tight spaces.  If, for example, the side camera needs to be replaced in the car, the car’s 360 camera calibration must be performed.

Figure 5 show an example of tools that can be used to perform 360 camera calibration together with a diagnostic testing device.

ADAS systems requirements in European Union

In the EU, several ADAS features are mandatory in new cars from the year 2022.  Following ADAS systems are required:

  1. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Detects potential collisions and applies the brakes if the driver doesn’t respond.
  2. Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA): Warns drivers and gently steers the vehicle if it drifts out of its lane.
  3. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA): Alerts the driver to speed limits and can reduce speed accordingly.
  4. Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning: Monitors for signs of driver fatigue or inattention and suggest taking a break if necessary.
  5. Reversing Camera or Detection System:  Provides visual or sensory feedback to avoid collisions while reversing.
  6. Event Data Recorder (EDR):  Logs information about the car’s systems and actions leading up to a crash for analysis.

The ADAS training package covers the operating principles of the above-mentioned systems.  For example, thanks to the automatic emergency braking function, rear-end collisions, accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists are significantly reduced.

By studying the ADAS course modules, you will gain an understanding of why cars have ADAS systems, how they work and how to ensure the operation of ADAS systems even after repair.  You will also understand the importance of ADAS systems as we transition to autonomous driving.

All courses developed within the project are funded by the European Union and are completely free for users. Upon completion, they will be published and stored in the Electude study module platform. In the picture below you can see an example of the course contents in Electude system.

Within the AutoCoVE 2.0 framework, Electude plays a pivotal role by providing its state-of-the-art e-learning platform to all partner VET institutions. The platform offers access to nearly 2,000 technical modules, facilitating the development of innovative study materials and training courses focused on modern vehicle technologies, including electric and hydrogen-powered systems.

Innovative Study Modules and Training courses

The Auto-Cove 2.0 consortium is developing innovative study modules and training courses focused on alternative fuel vehicle service and sales across three European Qualifications Framework (EQF) levels:

  • EQF Level 4: Study modules tailored for technical and business students.

  • EQF Level 5: Training courses designed for vehicle engineering students at the tertiary level.

  • EQF Levels 4, 5, and 6: Training courses aimed at vehicle field teachers in vocational colleges and universities of applied sciences. These courses will also serve to upskill current workshop leaders, car mechanics, and professionals in vehicle sales and spare parts across all seven partner countries.

These educational initiatives aim to address the urgent need for expertise in servicing electrified and hydrogen vehicles, ensuring that both new graduates and existing professionals are equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.
